Neither a borrower, nor a lender be; for loan oft loses both itself and friend, and borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Normally I start with a description of the races on Saturday, but this time, something very special happened – Mustang Boy was invited to the Devil’s Dual to be a CBE “All Star”!  Obviously, being an all star doesn’t require much more than a pulse, but either way, he was called up to deliver, and deliver he did.  No, not in the standings, despite making the sweet 16, but instead he delivered a death blow to a poor, innocent bird that dared wander into his Mustang’s path.

The Scene

The scene of the crime.

The racing Friday night was truly great, and many times, including both Larry Casey’s and Brian Karwan’s final qualification run, I caught myself cheering out-loud as I worked the course.  In the end, Larry wound up the fastest driver of the evening with some very well deserved wins, but the “All Stars” took the overall win for the evening.  As always, I do a poor job in describing the action, so it’s better to send you to a much more talented source – Duel in the Sun

Saturday morning came fast, and thanks to the talented wait and bar staff at the Braddock Inn, came hard.  All the “usuals” – Kate, Doug, Rich, Mustang Boy and I – were all there (Kate: insert editors notes here).  Thomas and Patrick were off fighting crime, one can only assume.  Bill was searching for weldable metal in the front of the Slotus.  This weekend, Mustang Boy and I called in favors.  He was in John Hubbell’s powerful Cobra, and I was in the Moran’s SUXASS Subaru, so it was to be show-down in XP all weekend.  Kate pulled off a class win in the BMW.  Doug battled it out with Steve Wade, winning DSP by 0.875 seconds.  Rich must have slashed the tires on Bill Herbaugh’s 87 Corvette, as he found himself in 5th place.  Mustang Boy and I duked it out in XP.  I managed to wind up in 7th place, 0.030 seconds ahead of Mustang Boy.  It doesn’t get much closer than that.

We awoke Sunday to another beautiful, yet still fuzzy day.  Larry, despite his win Friday night and 2nd place XP finish on Saturday, (I can only assume) ran in terror at the though of me being back in the Moran Subie.  His fears were confirmed, as I once again bested Mustang Boy by 0.258 to take 5th overall in XP.  Kate once again won her class and posted some very good times for a POS German luxury car.  With slightly more time between runs, I was able to watch Kate despite being in the same heat.  Things are really starting to click for her, and she’s adapting well to changing cars and an evolving setup.  I would be lying if I didn’t admit to sabotaging her, I mean, to being nervous for my standings.  Doug couldn’t hold off Steve, ending up in second place 0.086 seconds!  Rich “stayed the course” and finished in 5th place in BSP.

All in all, it was a great weekend.  I’d like to take a moment to thank all the Morans – Jen, Mike, and Jake – for allowing me to borrow their very, very fast car.  It was an absolute blast, and my drive home in the BMW was slower than than I remember.

Bird Killer on the Loose

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Last seen driving a white mustang wildly around cones at an airport in Cumberland. Evidently, this is a pastime of this so-called “Mustang Boy”. Use caution, as he is known to use this “Bird Killer” tactic to gain an advantage over his opponent. Just run through the feathers and hope it doesn’t take an engine out…

Extremely dangerous behind the wheel of ANY Cobra. He is easily turned on by birds and doesn’t take rejection lightly. Death usually follows.

You have been warned!

Last Mustang that took on the Cobras…
